update... I took these on an actual hike with lots of rocks on the approach to a climbing spot. The sole is indeed grippy but the upper of the shoe is very soft and it will not lock your feet down. I found that the shoe had a tendency to roll on angled rocks and in general my foot slid around a lot. So these just do not inspire confidence and unfortunately they will not work as advertised as actual approach shoes. I get up to some pretty sketchy approaches and I need a shoe that is grippy on rock and secure to my foot. If your approach is casual over a trail then these will work ok. But if your approach is on serious rock with real risk then look elseware. I cannot recommend them for anything but casual city use or a general walking trail which quite frankly any shoe can do..original review.. Very nice approach shoes with all the features I wanted. Very grippy outsole. Very comfortable. The heal that folds down to make them belay shoes is just perfect. I think they are stylish also. I would recommend and I might buy a second pair. The midsole looks white in the photos but it is more of a 20% gray.
